Response to the hunger strike

Mr. Yip, a former teacher who resigned in 2010, proposed to the College that it should adopt an online program that he developed in his spare time for the enhancement of students’ vocabulary. After a year of trial and consultation, the school authorities decided that the program could be appropriate as a learning tool, but that students should not be forced to participate in it. Mr. Yip was not happy with the decision. He insisted that the College should make the program compulsory for students, and that their scores should be included in their school reports. In response to the school’s decision, he expressed his intention to start a hunger strike on the footbridge across Queen’s Road East on 6 February, 2012. In view of his action, the school authorities express deep concern about the matter.

During Mr. Yip’s hunger strike, the school authorities will keep an eye on the situation, and provide suitable assistance if appropriate. It is hoped that Mr. Yip can be mindful of his health.

The school has arranged special sessions for the students, the staff, parents and alumni to explain the situation. Finally, the College respects Mr. Yip and is aware of his views. The College will seek improvement where necessary, and will continue to strive for academic excellence.
